Testosterone is intrinsically tied into the muscle building process in the human body. And it lies at the heart of the power in the male physique (and can add muscle to the female physique as well). You can see the one-to-one correlation of a decline in testosterone and a decline in muscle as the body ages. Testosterone is the mover for muscle gains, and lack of testosterone is the opposite - it prevents muscle gains. When people who are low in testosterone are given testosterone, their muscles increase. Push the testosterone button and the muscles start to build up.

So how exactly does testosterone work with muscle? What is the process of this unique hormone in your body? Studies (Journal of Applied Physiology -1985) suggest that testosterone increases muscle mass by increasing muscle protein synthesis. So protein is involved in the process, and so is outside force such as exercise or work. The International Journal of Sports Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism (March 2001) points out “Exercise has a profound effect on muscle growth, which can occur only if muscle protein synthesis exceeds muscle protein breakdown; there must be a positive muscle protein balance.” So testosterone works to boost muscle protein synthesis, which in turn fuels muscle growth. If you did not have adequate testosterone working in your body your workouts would break your body down instead of building it up. In fact sufficiently challenging workouts always break the body down to some extent. Testosterone acts as one of the major players to help build the body back up.

The International Journal of Sports Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism also points out “Hormones, especially insulin and testosterone, have important roles as regulators of muscle protein synthesis and muscle hypertrophy. Following exercise, insulin has only a permissive role on muscle protein synthesis, but it appears to inhibit the increase in muscle protein breakdown. In other words the key hormones of insulin and testosterone go to work preventing your muscles from breaking down, as well as acting to build the muscles back up. The more you can get insulin and testosterone involved, along with amino acids, the better.

Testosterone is not the only player in the muscle building process (you need exercise, food, rest, etc.) but it is a major player, and without testosterone the muscles would not grow but rather degenerate. The testosterone factor is vital and you overlook it to the detriment of your muscles.
